About

World Championship Wrestling (WCW) was an American professional wrestling promotion founded by Ted Turner in 1988, headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. The promotion came into existence after Turner Broadcasting System, through its subsidiary Universal Wrestling Corporation, purchased the assets of Jim Crockett Promotions, a National Wrestling Alliance territory that had previously aired its programming on TBS.

Throughout its existence, WCW stood as one of the two dominant professional wrestling promotions in the United States alongside the World Wrestling Federation (WWF). Under executive producer Eric Bischoff, appointed in 1993, the company shifted toward reality-based storylines and signed notable former WWF talent, while also developing a celebrated cruiserweight division featuring a lucha libre-inspired style. The 1995 debut of Monday Nitro ignited a ratings rivalry with the WWF's Monday Night Raw, and from 1996 to 1998 WCW surpassed its competitor for 83 consecutive weeks. However, creative missteps and the fallout from the 2001 AOL–Time Warner merger led to the promotion's closure, with the WWF purchasing select WCW assets, including its video library, intellectual property, and wrestler contracts, that same year.
