World Class Championship Wrestling (WCCW), headquartered in Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas, was an American professional wrestling promotion founded in 1966 by Ed McLemore. Originally known as Big Time Wrestling, the promotion was later run by Southwest Sports, Inc. under president Jack Adkisson, the wrestler known as Fritz Von Erich. A longtime member of the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA), WCCW held events at Dallas venues including the Reunion Arena and the famed Sportatorium. The promotion went independent from the NWA in 1986 in an attempt to become a major national promotion, but ultimately closed in 1990.
WCCW experienced its greatest success between 1981 and 1985, shattering attendance records and gaining global exposure through its syndicated television program. The promotion built its identity around the popular Von Erich brothers and a roster that included future stars such as Chris Adams, The Fabulous Freebirds, Jake Roberts, Mick Foley, Shawn Michaels, and Gino Hernandez. Rights to the pre-1989 WCCW tape library are held by WWE, with select episodes having been available on the WWE Network.
