About

Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) was an American professional wrestling promotion founded in 1992 as Eastern Championship Wrestling before rebranding in 1994. Based in Philadelphia at the ECW Arena (formerly Viking Hall), the promotion became known for its hardcore wrestling style, adult-oriented content, and devoted fanbase.

Under the creative direction of Paul Heyman, ECW developed a cult following and influenced the "Attitude Era" in mainstream wrestling. The promotion featured innovative matches, edgy storylines, and launched the careers of numerous wrestlers who became major stars including Steve Austin, Mick Foley, The Sandman, Tommy Dreamer, Taz, Rob Van Dam, Sabu, Terry Funk, and Rey Mysterio.

ECW declared bankruptcy in April 2001 after struggling with television deals and financial difficulties. WWE purchased the promotion's assets and library, later launching a revived ECW brand from 2006 to 2010. The original ECW remains legendary for its influence on modern wrestling presentation and its passionate "ECW! ECW!" fanbase.
