SummerSlam (1991)
SummerSlam 1991 was the fourth annual SummerSlam pay-per-view event produced by the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), taking place on Monday, August 26, 1991, at Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York, before an attendance of 20,000. The event featured nine matches, including a dark match held before the live broadcast, and marked the second time Madison Square Garden had hosted SummerSlam, the first occasion having been in 1988.
The event is perhaps best remembered for the on-screen wedding of Randy Savage and Miss Elizabeth, billed as "A Match Made in Heaven" by announcer Gene Okerlund, which was disrupted when Jake Roberts frightened Elizabeth with his snake and The Undertaker attacked Savage with an urn. The main event, contrasted as "A Match Made in Hell," saw WWF Champion Hulk Hogan and Ultimate Warrior face Sgt. Slaughter, General Adnan, and Colonel Mustafa in a handicap tag team match, concluding Slaughter's Iraqi sympathizer storyline tied to the Gulf War. Additionally, the Legion of Doom defeated the Nasty Boys to capture the WWF Tag Team Championship, becoming the only tag team to have held the WWF, NWA, and AWA world tag team titles.
