Biography
James Brian Hellwig, better known as the Ultimate Warrior, was born on June 16, 1959, and went on to become one of professional wrestling's most iconic figures before his death on April 8, 2014. After a career in bodybuilding, he began wrestling in 1985, initially teaming with Steve Borden — later known as Sting — as the Blade Runners. Following their split, Hellwig pursued a singles career in World Class Championship Wrestling under the name Dingo Warrior, capturing the WCWA Texas Heavyweight Championship. He was trained by Bill Anderson, Rick Bassman, and Red Bastien.
In 1987, Hellwig joined the World Wrestling Federation, where he became a two-time WWF Intercontinental Heavyweight Champion. At WrestleMania VI in 1990, he defeated Hulk Hogan in a title-versus-title match to win the WWF Championship, becoming the first wrestler to hold both titles simultaneously. His WWF tenure was marked by disputes with chairman Vince McMahon, and he was released in November 1992. He returned briefly for WrestleMania XII before being let go again after no-showing events. In 1998, he appeared in World Championship Wrestling in a widely criticized storyline with Hogan. Hellwig legally changed his name to Warrior in 1993 and retired from wrestling after a final match in Spain in 2008.
