About

SummerSlam (1988), officially marketed as SummerSlam '88, was the inaugural SummerSlam professional wrestling pay-per-view event produced by the World Wrestling Federation. It took place on August 29, 1988, at Madison Square Garden in New York City, drawing an attendance of 20,000. The event was created to help the WWF compete against rival promotion Jim Crockett Promotions and became one of the first four annual WWF pay-per-view events alongside WrestleMania, the Royal Rumble, and Survivor Series — a group later dubbed the "big four."

The event featured ten professional wrestling matches and is remembered for two particularly notable moments. In a preliminary match, WWF Intercontinental Champion The Honky Tonk Man faced a surprise challenger revealed to be the Ultimate Warrior, who defeated him in just 31 seconds, ending Honky Tonk Man's 14-month reign — at the time the longest Intercontinental Championship reign in history. The main event saw The Mega Powers, Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage, defeat The Mega Bucks, Ted DiBiase and André the Giant, after Savage's manager Miss Elizabeth distracted their opponents by removing her skirt.
