About

The National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) is an American professional wrestling promotion and governing body headquartered in Los Angeles, California, owned by Billy Corgan and operated through his parent company Lightning One, Inc. It was founded in 1948 by Pinkie George, Orville Brown, Al Haft, Harry Light, Sam Muchnick, Don Owen, and Tony Stecher.

Founded as a governing body for regional promotions, the NWA operated a territory system that recognized a singular world champion who defended his title across all member territories. Prior to the 1960s, it served as the sole governing body for professional wrestling in the United States, remaining the largest and most influential body in wrestling until the mid-1980s, when the World Wrestling Federation's national expansion drove most original member promotions out of business. Following the departure of World Championship Wrestling in 1993, the NWA continued as a coalition of independent promotions before transitioning through various structural changes. After Billy Corgan's 2017 purchase, the NWA evolved by late 2019 into a stand-alone singular promotion.
