Biography
Vincent Kennedy McMahon, born August 24, 1945, is an American businessman and former professional wrestling promoter best known as the co-founder of WWE, the world's largest professional wrestling promotion, which he built alongside his later-estranged wife Linda. McMahon graduated from East Carolina University with a business degree in 1968 and entered professional wrestling as a commentator for the World Wide Wrestling Federation, a role he held for most of the 1970s. In 1982, he purchased the company from his father, Vincent J. McMahon, and proceeded to nearly monopolize an industry that had previously operated as separate regional entities. His expansion of the company led to the creation of WrestleMania, which became the world's most successful professional wrestling event. WWE later purchased World Championship Wrestling in 2001 and acquired the assets of Extreme Championship Wrestling in 2003.
Beginning in 1997, McMahon adopted the villainous on-screen persona of Mr. McMahon, portraying an overbearing tyrant fixated on controlling his company. Under this character, he competed in matches and became a one-time WWE Champion, a one-time ECW Champion, and a Royal Rumble winner. McMahon stepped down as chairman and CEO in June 2022 following allegations of hush-money payments to former employees, and later resigned from TKO Group Holdings in January 2024 amid allegations of sex trafficking and sexual assault.
