Biography
Rodney Agatupu Anoaʻi (October 2, 1966 – October 23, 2000) was an American professional wrestler best known for his work in the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) under the ring name Yokozuna. Born of Samoan descent, he began his professional wrestling career in 1985 under the tutelage of Afa Anoaʻi, later gaining international exposure through appearances in New Japan Pro-Wrestling as Great Kokina.
In the WWF, Yokozuna's character was portrayed as a champion sumo wrestler, with his ring name referencing the highest rank in professional sumo. Although he was a Samoan American, he performed as a representative of Japan and was managed by the Japanese character Mr. Fuji, who accompanied him to the ring carrying a wooden bucket of salt and waving a Japanese flag. He was billed as hailing from Polynesia.
Yokozuna achieved remarkable success in the WWF, becoming a two-time WWF World Heavyweight Champion and two-time WWF Tag Team Champion alongside Owen Hart. He won the 1993 Royal Rumble and defeated both Bret Hart and Hulk Hogan at consecutive pay-per-views — WrestleMania IX and the 1993 King of the Ring — to capture his two world title reigns. He was the first wrestler of Samoan descent to hold the WWF World Heavyweight Championship and was posthumously inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2012.
