About

The WWE Universal Championship was a men's professional wrestling world heavyweight singles title created and promoted by WWE. Established on July 25, 2016, it was introduced as the top championship of the Raw brand following the reintroduction of WWE's brand split and a roster draft on July 19, 2016, which made the WWE Championship exclusive to the SmackDown brand. It was the third overall men's world championship created by the company, after the WWE Championship (1963) and the 2002–2013 version of the World Heavyweight Championship. The inaugural champion was Finn Bálor, and the title was named in honor of WWE's fanbase, known as the WWE Universe.

The championship headlined numerous major events, including seven consecutive SummerSlams from 2017 to 2023 and five WrestleManias. Following Crown Jewel 2019, the title moved to the SmackDown brand. From April 2022 until April 2024, it was jointly held with the WWE Championship as the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship, though both titles maintained separate lineages. Roman Reigns was the final recognized champion before the title was officially retired in April 2024.
