Biography
Mark William Calaway (born March 24, 1965) is an American retired professional wrestler best known by his ring name the Undertaker. He began his professional wrestling career in 1987, working under various gimmicks for World Class Championship Wrestling and other affiliate promotions. After a brief stint with World Championship Wrestling in 1989, he joined the World Wrestling Federation in 1990, where he rebranded himself as the Undertaker, adopting a funerary-themed "Deadman" persona built around an undead, macabre character. The gimmick earned him the Wrestling Observer Newsletter award for Best Gimmick a record five consecutive years. In 2000, he briefly transitioned to a biker identity known as "American Badass" before resurrecting the Deadman character in 2004. He was trained by Buzz Sawyer, Rick Davidson, and John Davidson.
Calaway spent the vast majority of his career with WWE, becoming the longest-tenured wrestler in company history at 30 years. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time and is particularly celebrated for his undefeated streak of 21 consecutive victories at WrestleMania. During his career he won the WWF/E Championship four times, the World Heavyweight Championship three times, the Hardcore Championship once, the World Tag Team Championship six times, and the Royal Rumble in 2007. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2022.
